January 14th Recap - Standing Room Only

This Sunday evening was our biggest Trivia Night yet. Thanks to everyone for coming out and playing. The winners were yet again the No Wave Hookers (see photo above).
The 4 rounds were:
1. "Best Song" Oscar
2. Photo Round - Top 10 Albums of 2006
3. Audio Round - Soft Rock hits
4. James Brown
Background music theme: NFL Teams
Some of the questions were:
1. Burt Bacharach won a Best Song Oscar in 1969 for what song from “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”?
2. In 1986 the group Berlin won with “You Take My Breath Away” from what film?
3. “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” was the 2005 Oscar winner from what film?
4. In 1973, James Brown recorded the soundtrack to what blaxploitation film?
5. The beat of this James Brown funk track track is widely considered to be the most sampled song in music history?
The photo round featured slices of album covers that were from releases that made many magazines' Top 10 lists. Some were: Joanna Newsom, Neko Case, TV on the Radio, and The Decemberists. A few teams got all 10 correct.
The audio round was inspired by The Wusses' New Year's Eve show at Local 506 in which they covered the Little River Band, Looking Glass, Player, and other favorites of Lite FM radio. Some of the audio samples were: "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes, "Biggest Part of Me" by Ambrosia, and "Africa" by Toto. Team Geoff Leopard won that round with 9.5 correct (they missed the title of the James Blunt song. It was Michael Scott's favorite breakup song, "Goodbye, My Lover").
The background music was provided by a Guest Contributor, Stacy Philpott of Team Sparks. All of the bands or song titles contained the name of an NFL team. Some examples:
Wire - Ex-Lion Tamer
Paul Revere & the Raiders - Indian Reservation
Lyle Lovett - Long Tall Texan
Air Miami - Dolphin Expressway
Sen. John Ashcroft(!) - Let the Eagle Soar (has to be heard to be believed)
The next Music Trivia Night is Sunday, January 28th. We'll have THREE Guest Contributors this time: Local DJ Tim Ross, music writer Fred Mills, and John Darniellle of the Mountain Goats. As always, doors open at 7:30, the first 4-person team to arrive gets a free pizza, Carolina brewery draft is $3, and the game begins at 8:00.
See you on Sunday,
Phil
