September 16th Winners

For the first time in recent memory, we had two teams with "Dutch" in the title: "The Other Damn Dutch", who knew a lot about Pavarotti, and "Dutch Mayonnaise", who knew a lot about everything. They ended up taking the grand prize.

1. New York City
2. Photo round - Billboard Top 15
3. Audio round - provided by Billy of Geoff Leopard
4. Pavarotti

April 22nd Recap

Here are your winners from April 22nd. Our next trivia night will be Sunday, May 6th.
Here's a recap of the last trivia night by Glenn:
_____________________

Our top two teams, No Wave Hookers and Team Sparks, battled to the end, and for the first time ever, the winning team was determined by their knowledge of the background theme earlier than the other. After four rounds, the Hookers held a half-point lead; however, Team Sparks got an extra point for guessing the background theme a round before the Hookers.

The background theme this week, inspired by my/Glenn's birthday the day before, was all vocalists born in 1967. To make it easier for the contestants, an extra clue about the background theme was given after each round. Similarly, the audio round included all songs with 'birthday' in the title.

The other rounds this week included a round of questions dedicated to Indie Rock and contributed by guest particpant Jeb Marlowe. Phil offered up an round of Brit-Pop Questions and a visual round focused on animals that appear on album covers.

Here's some samples:
Round 1) Indie Rock Esoterica (by Jeb Marlowe)
1. What band was dismissed from the label Sub Pop for issuing a false press release announcing the death of one of their members? 2. What Pavement album title is a tribute to former drummer, bad drunk, acrobat and mentor Gary Young?

Round 2) Visual Round - Some of the album covers were Bettie Serveert - Palomine, Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother, and The Go Team - Thunder Lightning Strike.

Round 3) Audio Round - Songs with Birthday in title (by Glenn) Songs included 'Birthday' by Sugarcubes and 'Birthday Cake' by Cibo Matto

Round 4) Brit-Pop
3. The Oasis song “Wonderwall” takes its name from the album “Wonderwall Music” by what artist?
4. What group’s 1989 self-titled debut album and 1990 outdoor concert at Spike Island are considered by many to be the catalysts of the Britpop movement?

Background Theme - Vocalists Born in 1967
Songs included such bands as Nirvana (Kurt Cobain), Smashing Pumpkins (Billy
Corrigan) and Wilco (Jeff Tweedy) as well as solo artists such as Liz Phair, Harry Connick Jr and Gillian Welch.

Answers: 1. The Dwarves; 2. Wowee Zowee; 3. George Harrison; 4. The Stone Roses

April 8 Recap

Here are your winners from the Easter Sunday Music Trivia Night.

Here's Glenn's recap:

For the first time since we started Music Trivia Night, the No Wave Hookers, who were noticeably short-handed, didn't even place in the Top Three; although taking the top spot this week was another familiar name, Team Sparks (back to full strength, after barely participating the week before.) Speaking of 'bearly' participating, The Spirit Animals, who had been hibernating all winter, clawed their way to second place, edging out perennial Top Three team Geoff Leopard.

The trivia this week was old-school style, with most of the questions provided by Phil and Glenn (although Glenn did collaborate with Alyson West on the movie round.) Here's what you missed:

1. Question Round - Music-Related Movies - Glenn & Alyson
2. Visual Round - Brothers & Sisters - Glenn
3. Audio Round - Classic Soul - Phil
4. Question Round - Music-Related Books - Glenn

Here are some sample questions:
1. In 1984, Tom Hulce was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of this musician?
2. Kyle MacLachlan, better known for his roles on Twin Peaks and Sex in the City, portrayed which member of The Doors in the 1991 Oliver Stone movie?
3. "Please Kill Me", a book about the CBGB's scene of the 70's was written by Legs McNeil, who was co-founder of which fanzine from that time-period?
4. "Revolution in the Head" is an exhaustive look at the recording process of each Beatles song. A similar booked titled "Songs that Saved Your Life" chronicles the work of what 80's act?

The visual round included photos of Sisters of Mercy and Big Brother & the Holding Company among other real brother/sister acts such as the Neville Brothers and the Pointer Sisters.

Some of the samples in the audio round were:
"Float On" by The Floaters
"Fa-Fa-Fa-fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)" by Otis Redding
"Move On Up" by Curtis Mayfield

In addition, Phil prepared the background theme, which was songs sung by Jewish performers. The theme included songs by solo artists like Leonard Cohen, Barbra Streisand, and Sammy Davis Jr., as well as bands like Yo La Tengo (Ira Kaplan) and The Ramones (Joey Ramone).

We'll be doing it all again on Sunday, April 22nd, where we're pretty sure we'll have our first round dedicated specifically to indie-rock (which we always get asked about.) So, come out...Glenn

Answers:
1. (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart)
2. (Ray Manzarek)
3. ("Punk" magazine)
4. (The Smiths)

March 11 Winners / Next Trivia Night

Your winners of the past 2 Trivia Nights, the No Wave Hookers.

The next Music Trivia Night will be Sunday, April 8th. Some of you have Monday off, so please come join us. Maybe Glenn will provide some Cadbury eggs in addition to the goldfish.

Here are the 4 rounds we did on March 11:

1. Clothing - by Guest Contributor Max Brzezinski of the Durham Wizards
2. Rolling Stones vs. The Beatles - by Guest Contributor Jon Mitchell of Local 506
3. Audio Round - Songs that reference ACC team names - by Glenn
4. Washington, DC - by Guest Contributor Richard Allen of the No Wave Hookers

Some of the questions were:

1. Nancy Sinatra famously sang "These Boots Are Made for Walking." Who wrote it?
2. This album by Britpop act Pulp won the 1996 Mercury Music Prize (equivalent to US Grammy for Album of the Year) and includes the slightly pervy song called “Underwear”?
3. In 1967, John Lennon & Paul McCartney sang backup vocals on this Rolling Stones single which is said to have been both a thank you to their fans for sticking by them during their drug bust trials and a barbed attack on their percieved persecutors. Hint: It opens with the sound of footsteps and a jail door slamming shut.
4. What folk guitar innovator who died in 2001 named his label Takoma Records after his hometown, the DC suburb of Takoma Park, MD?

A couple of the Audio Round songs were:
Steely Dan – Deacon Blues (Wake Forest) and
Survivor – Eye of the Tiger (Clemson).

The background theme was provided by Matt Burr of the No Wave Hookers and was "Songs That Have Appeared on The Simpsons".

January 28th - Don't Call It a Comeback

Here are your winners. The recap this week is provided by Glenn:

Another strong turnout welcomed three special guest contributions from
writer Fred Mills (Harp, Magnet, etc.), musician John Darnielle (Mountain
Goats) and DJ Tim Ross (Hell's Disco Inferno, Tuba Frenzy, etc.)

Returning to the winner's circle were Team Sparks, which already includes a
couple former WXYC DJ's (Stacy Philpott and Cyrus Rawls) but this week they
got a little help from current XYC'er Montgomery M.

Here are the four rounds:

1. Music Scandals
2. Hand-out Round - Australian Music
3. Audio Round - Mamas & Papas, kinda
4. Heavy Metal
Background Music Theme: Artists on Atlantic Records

Fred Mills handled the Australian round. As anyone familiar with his writing
knows, he's a huge fan of that continent's music scene. More surprisingly,
John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats handled the heavy metal round (although
anyone familiar with his blog lastplanetojakarta.com would not be so
surprised.) Phil wrote the Scandals round (which thankfully did not include
any Patty Smyth questions.) Here's a taste (Answers at bottom of the page.)

1. Eric Clapton wrote the song Layla about which artist¹s wife, whom he was
having an affair with at the time?
2. Which Rolling Stone married 19-year old Mandy Smith when he was 52, six
years after he had begun a relationship with her?
3. What group beat both the Sex Pistols and the Damned to the punk table by
releasing the first international (e.g., non-U.S.) punk 45, and what was the
title? Also, please write the month and year of the release, which will be
used to decide winners in the event of a tie
4. Peter Garrett, of what internationally successful '80s/'90s Australian
band, ran for a seat in the Australian Senate in 1984 under the Nuclear
Disarmament Party banner and narrowly lost after a recount?
5. Van Halen's first vocalist was David Lee Roth. Their second and fourth
were Sammy Hagar. Who was the third?
6. Attempts to blend metal and rap plagued the late eighties and early
nineties. In 1991, what metal band covered Public Enemy's "Bring the Noise"
and managed not to lose all their credibility?

The audio round was inspired by the recent death of Denny Doherty of the
Mamas and the Papas ("California Dreaming" is one of my favorites songs of
all-time!) With that said, none of the samples played had anything to do
with that band, but were all songs with some derivation of 'mama' or 'papa'
in the title including the following:
1. LL Cool J - "Mama Said Knock You Out"
2. Pavement - "Father of a Sister of Thought"
3. Fountains of Wayne - "Stacey's Mom"

The background theme was provided by out-of-town Fuss Frucks member Tim Ross
and was in honor of the recent death of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet
Ertugun. The theme included Atlantic Recording acts both new and old - from
Aretha Franklin & Ray Charles to Led Zeppelin & AC/DC to T.I. & Stone Temple
Pilots.

The next Music Trivia Night is Sunday, February 18th at 8pm - We're only
doing it once this month due to the Super Bowl and some UNC games eating up
the Sundays! Doors open and background theme starts at 7:30, the first
4-person team to arrive gets a free pizza, plus the Carolina brewery draft
is $3.

See you there....glenn

More Scenes from Music Trivia Night

January 14th Recap - Standing Room Only

This Sunday evening was our biggest Trivia Night yet. Thanks to everyone for coming out and playing. The winners were yet again the No Wave Hookers (see photo above).

The 4 rounds were:

1. "Best Song" Oscar

2. Photo Round - Top 10 Albums of 2006

3. Audio Round - Soft Rock hits

4. James Brown

Background music theme: NFL Teams

Some of the questions were:

1. Burt Bacharach won a Best Song Oscar in 1969 for what song from “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”?

2. In 1986 the group Berlin won with “You Take My Breath Away” from what film?

3. “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” was the 2005 Oscar winner from what film?

4. In 1973, James Brown recorded the soundtrack to what blaxploitation film?

5. The beat of this James Brown funk track track is widely considered to be the most sampled song in music history?

The photo round featured slices of album covers that were from releases that made many magazines' Top 10 lists. Some were: Joanna Newsom, Neko Case, TV on the Radio, and The Decemberists. A few teams got all 10 correct.

The audio round was inspired by The Wusses' New Year's Eve show at Local 506 in which they covered the Little River Band, Looking Glass, Player, and other favorites of Lite FM radio. Some of the audio samples were: "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes, "Biggest Part of Me" by Ambrosia, and "Africa" by Toto. Team Geoff Leopard won that round with 9.5 correct (they missed the title of the James Blunt song. It was Michael Scott's favorite breakup song, "Goodbye, My Lover").

The background music was provided by a Guest Contributor, Stacy Philpott of Team Sparks. All of the bands or song titles contained the name of an NFL team. Some examples:
Wire - Ex-Lion Tamer
Paul Revere & the Raiders - Indian Reservation
Lyle Lovett - Long Tall Texan
Air Miami - Dolphin Expressway
Sen. John Ashcroft(!) - Let the Eagle Soar (has to be heard to be believed)

The next Music Trivia Night is Sunday, January 28th. We'll have THREE Guest Contributors this time: Local DJ Tim Ross, music writer Fred Mills, and John Darniellle of the Mountain Goats. As always, doors open at 7:30, the first 4-person team to arrive gets a free pizza, Carolina brewery draft is $3, and the game begins at 8:00.

See you on Sunday,
Phil

December 17th Recap - Modified Hookers Prevail

Here are your winners. As you can see by the final scores, it was a very close game.

The topics were:
1. The Grammy Awards
2. Photo round (Royalty names)
3. Audio round ("Legends" of country music)
4. Lily
Background music theme: The Wizard of Oz

A few of the questions:
1. What band famously beat out Metallica for the inaugural "Best Heavy Metal Performance" Grammy in 1990?
2. What group holds the record for most non-classical Grammys?
3. "Lily on the Beach" is the 1989 album by what group, who were formed in Germany in 1967 and have recorded over 40 soundtracks, including "Risky Business" and "Thief"?
4. The 1989 soundtrack "Lily Was Here" was the first solo album by what former Eurhythmic?
5. [Bonus Grammy question] Who won the Best Spoken Word Album Grammy in 1993 for "What You Can Do to Avoid AIDS"?

The photo round featured pictures of artists who have, uh, "regal" names (Sir Mix-a-Lot, Lady Sovereign, Prince, etc.). Teams did pretty well on that round, but only one team got Queen Ida correct.

The audio round featured a Guest Contributor: Cy from Team Sparks. He played audio samples of "Country Music Legends", including Charley Pride, Webb Pierce, Loretta Lynn & George Jones, and of course, The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, who is now the only artist to appear twice in the same round. Perhaps Cy has some interest in reviving the Cowboy's career? Is he a distant uncle or something?

As for the background music, they were all songs that somehow referenced the Wizard of Oz in the title. About half the teams got it correct early on in the evening, especially after a string of songs that each had "Lions", "Tiger", and "Bear" in the title. Some of the others were:

Ozzy Osbourne - Flying High Again
The Pernice Brothers - Monkey Suit
Coldplay - Yellow
The Who - Pinball Wizard
The Wedding Present - Kansas

The next trivia night will be Sunday, January 14th. We'll be having our first Background Music Guest Contributor. Which reminds me, if you're interested in being a Guest Contributor in the future, please let me or Glenn know. You can always email me at xlate@yahoo.com.

See you on Sunday,

-Phil

December 3rd Recap - New Winners

The era of Hookers/Sparks domination has ended (at least for now). Sunday night we crowned a new champion at Local 506. Congratulations to the Fuss Frucks for winning what may have been the most challenging Trivia Night yet.

The 4 categories were:
1. Booze
2. Artists and their states (visual round)
3. Music of the world (audio round)
4. The Billboard Top 200 Chart
Background music theme: Songs with proper names

I created the questions for rounds 1 & 3, Glenn did round 4 and the background theme, and we had our first Guest Contributor, Stacy Philpott of Team Sparks, who did the visual round.

Here are some of the questions from the evening:
1. What former Rhodes Scholar wrote the classic “Sunday Morning Coming Down”?
2. The number four album this week, “Love”, features variations of this act's material and serves as the soundtrack to Cirque Du Soleil’s Las Vegas show?
3. Jay Z’s “Kingdom Come” debuted at Number One this week, his ninth album to reach number one, third most all-time behind The Beatles and which artist?
4. On his debut solo album, Scott Walker recorded a cover of “Amsterdam” by what Belgian singer/songwriter?

Some of the background songs were:

Stereolab – Cybele’s Reverie

Decemberists – Leslie Anne Levine

The Rolling Stones - Lady Jane

Joni Mitchell - The Last Time I Saw Richard

Cat Power - Willie

Spott's photo line-up had Schooly D, Babyface, Low, Seven Mary 3(!), and some others. Having an outline of the state inside the photo helped quite a bit, I have to say.

My "Music of the World" audio round had snippets of songs from Sigur Ros, Shonen Knife, Broken Social Scene, and the legendary World Music singer Kylie Minogue. I only asked for the name of the artist and country of origin, and in most cases teams got at least the country of origin correct. I thought the only sneaky one on there was Lucky Dube, who's a reggae artist but happens to be from South Africa. Still, two teams got that correct. Alas, no one got my Russian singer (Vladimir Vysotsky) correct, but I just had to include him or else they'll take my Slavic Studies degree away (or poison me!).

As I mentioned earlier, this was one of the more challenging Trivia Nights, but teams still did very well. The Fuss Frucks really pulled out in front in the photo round, but otherwise it was very close, with three teams tied or within a point of one another at the end.

This Sunday is the last Trivia Night of the year. Please come and join us. The next Trivia Nights will be January 14th and 28th, which is a departure from our usual pattern of the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month.
-Phil
PS. Here's a little article in the CH News that mentions us:
http://www.chapelhillnews.com/106/story/4207.html
PPS. The answers: 1: Kris Kristofferson; 2: The Beatles; 3: Elvis; 4: Jacques Brel (that one was for you, Gordon!)

Nov 19 Recap / Request for Contributors

Here are your winners from Sunday night. By virtue of 4 missing players, there was an alliance-of-convenience between Team Sparks and the Fuss Frucks for one night, resulting in a narrow 1-point victory.

The topics were:
1. Thanksgiving
2. Head/torso/feet album covers (photo round)
3. Distinctive album beginnings revisited (audio round)
4. New Releases

There was some controversy (shocking!) about the background theme, since it was basically the same as a theme we'd done before with a slight twist. it was "First Songs on Albums", but almost all the songs were related to "radio", so we asked "What do these songs have in common BESIDES being about radio?" In any case, a number of people said they wouldn't have guessed "First Songs" since we had used that before, so lesson learned*. We won't repeat a theme again.

Also, the winners of the Domino's Early Bird Special were Geoff Leopard, who won a free medium pizza. So it pays to show up early!

Here are some of the questions we asked:
1. "Thanks for Nothing" was the only album Rosemary Clooney recorded for Reprise Records, which was owned by what singer?
2. Which former British invasion band leader released the "Thanksgiving Day" EP in 2005 as a preview for "Other People's Lives", his first new collection of songs in nearly 13 years?
3. "Dr's Advocate" is the new release by The Game, who is the rival and former employee of what artist?
4. "The Road to Escondido" is a new collaboration between Eric Clapton and this artist, who also penned Clapton's hits "After Midnight" and "Cocaine".
5. "I'm in the Mood for Love" is the new release by what artist, who Bill Clinton once claimed was his favorite jazz musician?
[Answers below]

For the next trivia we're going to try something new on our end. Glenn, Jeff, and I usually collaborate on each topic, but next time we're going to do them completely separately, partly because we'd like to see what it's like to be a competitor. I'll have no idea what Glenn's questions are, and he won't know mine, etc. We're also doing this so that we can get you guys involved in doing a round. It would be great to have a guest round each trivia night, so if you think you'd like to do that, please send me an email at xlate[at]yahoo.com. You can do it on any topic you like, but if it's super-obscure and everyone hates you afterwards, you have only yourself to blame!

See you on December 3rd,
-Phil
*By the way "Lessons Learned" by Dan Fogelberg is a horrible song that gets stuck in my head every time I utter that expression. I blame my mother, who played his "Nether Lands" album ad nauseum in the Summer of '78 or so. The burdens we children have to bear!

[Answers: 1. Frank Sinatra; 2. Ray Davies; 3. 50 Cent; 4. J. J. Cale; 5. KENNY G]

The topics were:
1. Wednesday
2. Album tic-tac-toe (visual round)
3. St Louis vs. Detroit (audio round)
4. CMJ (the College Music Journal convention in New York)
The background music theme was "Songs with Metals in the Titles" (Such as: Gerty - Silver Balloon; Radiohead - My Iron Lung; Sleater-Kinney - Ironclad; Nirvana - Lithium)

Here are a few of the questions:
1. The Los Angeles band Wednesday Week took their name from their favorite song by what act, who also recorded John Peel's favorite song of all time?

The answers
1. The Undertones
2. Dick Clark

4. Albert Hammond, Jr.
5. Sin-e

The winners of the Early Bird prize (the first 4-person team to have all their members present) were the Fuss Frucks, who got a free medium pizza delivered from Domino's (Thanks, Stephen!).

Next Trivia Night will be Sunday, November 19th.

Also, we'd really like to hear any suggestions you have for improving Trivia Night. Are the questions too hard? Too easy? Do you like the bar snacks? Do you feel like you have enough free time between rounds? Do you like the "background music" question and how it's scored? Are any genres under- or over-represented in our questions? Please leave us feedback here on the blog.

Also, we're going to start looking for players to start volunteering to be guest questioners. You basically would come up with a trivia round of your own (10 questions), and you would have to sit out for that round (although you can join your team for the rest of the game). If interested, talk to me, Glenn, or Jeff sometime.

-Phil

October 15 Winners

Team Sparks channeling The Misfits (from the "Halloween" round that night)

Wednesday, October 18, 2006

We have a blog

Woo-hoo!

Next Trivia Night will be Wednesday, November 1.

By the way, here are the songs played during last week's game. The Mystery Background Theme was "Songs That Mention the Album Title". Glenn compiled this one. As you might notice, not only do the songs mention the album titles, but the songs themselves are not actually "title tracks". So this definitely took a lot of creative thinking.

Here's some of what you would have heard had you been there on October 15:

Artist/Song/Album

The Ramones / Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio? / End of the Century
Pixies / Mr. Grieves / Doolittle
Syd Barrett / Octopus / The Madcap Laughs
Nirvana / Smells Like Teen Spirit / Nevermind
Simon & Garfunkel / Scarborough Fair/Canticle Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme
